We finally got some rain which was awesome. I think we went over 40 days with no rain which is some crazy record for here in Raincouver. I was planning on doing Norvan Falls again a couple of times this weekend just to get in shape but the thought of trudging in the rain just didn’t appeal. The idea was to do two back to back hikes so i know what it is like before i start the Great Divide Trail but doing it in the rain when i didn’t have to took all the romance out of it. I went back to bed and had a lazy Saturday morning instead. I’ll probably pay for it in a couple of weeks when i start my hike. Sarah and i went to MEC instead to pick up a few last minute items for my trip and i did some online shopping as well.
I spent some more time in the basement sorting out taking down the ceiling. I had installed pot lights after we rewired so i had to turn off the power, setup some lighting, and carefully take down the ceiling passing the fixtures through the hole as i did. Renovation fixtures are just attached to the drywall and held in with clips usually so i had to figure out how to screw them directly to the subfloor. It was a bit of a mess. I filled the first drywall bag and have a garbage can overflowing with unusable chunks. I cleaned up several times as i went to keep the dust and mouse shit down and pulled all the nails and screws from the ceiling to avoid tearing open my scalp.
We knew that the house had been infested with mice over the years. We spent the first few years plugging holes we would find and even now we occasionally have mouse problems. Having a mouse proof house is a key payoff for the reno. When we bought it we found trays of mouse poison and there was a memorable incident when a dead mouse nest fell out the basement ceiling on my father when we were rewiring. Now it is my turn turn i guess. I have started a jar where i am collecting mouse skeletons.
I cut a few pieces of drywall to fit between the joists too and i think my plan is going to work. The material isn’t quite as thick as the specifications i read, and it does have the occasional hole from where the nails pulled through, but this is going over and above the basic specifications so i am sure it will make an improvement. Every kilo of drywall i stick to the ceiling is a kilo i don’t have to hall to the dump.
