The cavalry arrived today in the form of my father who came over from Victoria to give me a hand. This made it the most productive weekend since Sarah was gone and i trashed the kitchen.
It is amazing the difference a second pair of hands make and dad and i got way more done than i anticipated. He measured and cut the pieces while i did more demo and took out a bunch of framing. We were able to do the test fits together and he held the pieces in place while i put in the drywall screws which made a world of difference. We put in about 4 sessions and worked ourselves stupid. There wasn’t really room for us both to be cutting sheets of drywall and we only had one framing square so i left it to him. It was nice to take a break from the drywall work and knock down a wall. It really opened up the space.
I keep forgetting that my dad is 80 now! He worked like a man decades younger. It was great to sink a pint with him at The Irish Heather after making a ton of progress. I have learned so much from him over the years as he built fences, barns, basements, and of course worked on numerous cars. It was familiar and comforting after a tough couple of covid years and the loss of my mother.
We also got the initial kitchen concepts from the architect which have the basic structure right but aren’t the finishes we had been thinking about. Apparently he can’t actually read our minds. There was nothing wrong with them but it just wasn’t what we had in mind. As a small example, we are not replacing our fridge. We are preparing some notes.
