After two weeks off i was ready to get back at it. It is becoming logistically complex to get the work done because we have to keep shifting stuff out of the way. Without a clear timeline on when the actual building will start i don’t want to be starting to pay for storage but my frustration might change that soon.
Friday we had a visit from the builder, Dean, and he toured to see where we were at with the demolition. It has been months since he last stopped by and he wanted to see if i had actually done anything. We talked about all sorts of things and I think he was trying to get me to hire one of his labourers to help but i am not there yet. I showed him the concrete hearth that we have help up with the telepost and he confirmed that we did the right thing. He has seen them fall before and with the gas line there that would have been inconvenient. One thing he did tell me which is a bit of a setback is that the engineer is likely going to want us to add a couple of beams going across the house between the joists. This will require us to cut back the drywall we have already glued up there. Ugh. I did not want to hear that and i still hope that we won’t have to, but for now, we will not be putting up anymore soundproofing.
Ric came over to give me a hand which was great and we managed to take the short wall off the foundation and rip up a bit of the floor to see what we were up against. This was a bit nerve wracking because i had no idea what we would find but in the end it wasn’t too bad. The floor of the foundation is pretty thin concrete and one of the problems is that there is no waterproofing so moisture rises through it. They had laid 2×4’s down and built the floor on top of that with T&G fir. At some point, likely in the 70’s they had glued linoleum flooring to that. I was expecting to find a bunch of mold but it wasn’t too bad. The floor had been painted but the rising moisture had peeked a bunch of it up. There was some mold and a few mummified mice but overall it was manageable. Most of the mold was actually on the west foundation. So glad this is all going!
We quickly filled the trailer and Ric came along to the dump to help me empty it. That was the first time i had done that with someone else in the car and it went OK. I still need lots of room and never end up where i was originally aiming but he was nice and didn’t laugh much.
