Now that the house is up, we are waiting again. The excavators were supposed to arrive this week but were a no-show because they were delayed on another job. Maybe not entirely a no-show because a little digger was dropped off. Maybe that’s a good sign? Hopefully they will get here next week.
The focus this week was my sister’s wedding. Well, it was supposed to be. I woke up Thursday morning to a middle of the night message from her fiancé that showed a positive COVID test. I guess she had been a little stressed and was feeling a bit sick so got up in the middle of the night to take the test to set her mind at ease. Surprise!
Weddings have a certain amount of momentum though, and while the ceremony can be cancelled, there are a lot of people and other plans in motion so close to the date. We already had a ferry reservation and my aunt Joan had flown out from Ontario so we decided to go over to Victoria anyway. Lots of texts with cousins ensued and a family gathering was quickly arraigned at my other aunts for the night of the wedding since we were all in town with no other plans. There aren’t many chances to get together anymore and having lost my mum, her eldest sister, and her other sisters husband, we haven’t had a lot of happy occasions to get together. We decided to make the best of it and it was a lot of fun.
We did manage a quick visit with Mary and Dawn in their backyard. Dawn came out and sat at a distance when her sister and partner showed up and we had a socially distanced visit. Her sister had flown in from Edmonton a few days early like my aunt but luckily had been doing a few tourist things so hadn’t seen Dawn before she got sick. Expectation is that Mary will come down with COVID in the next few days so we kept it short. We also made the most of it and spent time catching up with friends. This year has been pretty busy so it was nice to just relax.
It was great to see everyone and it was a celebratory occasion even if there was no wedding to celebrate. It has been a tough 2 years with covid isolation and it was the first time we have all seen each other since “before”.
