This was a hard few weeks. Sarah’s father passed on August 26th with her mum at his side. He had chosen MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) which was a little surreal and a new experience for all of us. The doctor and nurse were amazing and it was very peaceful but all of that makes it no less hard.
I was glad we went out and could be there to say goodbye and support Sarah’s mother. John was a self-taught homesteader. He was born in Bradford England and emigrated to Canada in his 20’s with Jennifer. He worked in advertising, started a company and a family, in Toronto before buying a 30 acre farm on the Canadian Shield. In his 40’s he and Jennifer sold up and moved to the farm where they raised sheep, had jersey cows, a huge garden and lived his dream. If he wanted to do something he bought a book about it, read up, and did it. He bought me my first drill and taught me the importance of patience when mudding and sanding drywall. He was tied to the farm so only visited us twice. The first time was after Brianna was born, and the second time was a decade later when we moved to Vancouver so he could help us make the house livable.
He will be missed.
